I created these virtual vistas
while working for the BLM National Training Center (1997-2001).
My specfic assignment was to provide virtual fly-throughs of
the Arizona Trails system. Click here for info on the Arizona Trails.
These composite images
(resolution: 800x600) were created in two steps. First, the basic
landscape was rendered in a terrain generation program (Vistapro 4.0) which converts USGS digital
elevation models (DEMs) into 3-D raster images. Then several
graphics programs (different features) are used to add art, image
inlays, and text components to create the final images seen here.
The USGS DEMs create very accurate 3-D models of desired geographic
locations. But, artistic license may spur changes in image
components such as terrain colors and textures, water levels,
vegetation, structures and structure locations, sun and moon
azimuths and whatever else may be deemed necessary to make the
scene aesthetically appealing.

Grand Canyon Run: This animated 'mpg' file was created
as part of the NTC Arizona Trails project. In all, six quads
(DEM files), from the top of Arizona to the Mexican border, were
animated to show the original path of the Arizona Trails system.
Vistapro was used for most of these animation sequences. This
particular animation is but a small part of the total number
of animations used in the finished production. |
